When their families forbid it, they jump into a spaceship and leave their planet, forcing their relations to team up to find them, voyaging to strange worlds on the way. As children they're warned to stay away from each other because of old prejudices, but they become friends, fall in love and decide to marry. In the story, Janet is a Smed (they're red and have hair on their heads) while Bill is a Smoo (they're blue and jump about like kangaroos). There are multiple eyes, long arms and funny tails, and he admits it was a challenge drawing creatures who were both odd but cute, recognisable but not too human – but it was one he relished.
Julia has created a faraway world with a 'loobular lake' and a 'humplety hill', while Axel has peopled it with strange-looking creatures and wondrous landscapes.Īs we chat at a London hotel, he shows me some of the sketches he made as he began to create the story's two heroes. It's so beautifully made you don't even need children for an excuse to watch it.
